How to handle anxiety in times of uncertainty

I am surprisingly calm right now.

I have a lot of love and compassion for what people are going through with covid-19. But I am not at all flipping out about things.

As someone who has historically been VERY high anxiety, this is kind of crazy. This doesn’t mean I’m not informed. It doesn’t mean I’m not taking things seriously.

It means I’ve cultivated a new and impressive skill. The skill of showing up to the wild uncertainty of life with calm, clarity, and confidence.

How did I get this way?

The answer to that is easy.

I quit my awesome, stable, cozy corporate job and started a business. And for the past 1.5+ years, I’ve been managing my anxiety on the daily. Sometimes on the hourly, to be honest.

I’ve been getting coached. I’ve been coaching myself. I’ve been showing up. I’ve been getting stronger.

I didn’t realize how strong I’d become. How resilient. But now I can see it.

And it’s blowing my mind a little.

That being said, I am also grieving. You probably are, too. The world has changed dramatically. We have new concerns. And we also have all of our old concerns.

We’re missing people. We’re missing getting out. We’re even missing our commutes.

When things change and feel uncertain, it can be hard to get our bearings. And we may not always know why it feels so hard. Why we’re struggling so much.

Part of the reason for that is that most of us don’t actually know how to grieve. How to allow our anxiety and uncertainty to be there without swallowing us up.

Instead, we just feel off.

We feel like we should be more grateful for what we do have, for what is going well. But it’s also ok to fall apart. It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok the be afraid.

Whatever you’re feeling, let yourself feel it. Just for a few minutes. It won’t swallow you up. It won’t destroy you.

You’ll actually feel much better afterwards.

Feeling our feelings is how we move through them. Moving through them is how we get to the other side.

Getting to the other side is how we access the wisdom and creativity that we all contain.
